Over-the-top fun!

Let’s face it, 2K had a rough time with WWE 2K20, which ultimately lead to the birth of WWE 2K Battlegrounds. While the original games grasped more of a simulation type playstyle, Battlegrounds offers up cartoonish, over-the-top fun that was severely lacking in the wrestling genre.

And fun it is… Battlegrounds is exactly what I have been looking for in a wrestling game. The over-the-top action and chibi-styled characters make this game all-out wacky, fun, and just completely awesome. This is thanks to the pick-up and play style of the game. While each character has a limited amount of moves, they are absolutely awesome and, as I keep saying, insanely over-the-top.

Watching Roman Reigns slam his opponent into the ring is just as entertaining as watching Stone Cold Steve Austin deliver a Stone Cold Stunner. During matches, each character also gets some super cool power-ups that can ultimately turn the tide of any match. These range from unblockable attacks to in-ring healing.

What I really love about this game is the fact that it is just all-out fun. Watching the ring smash to pieces when launching yourself off a helicopter is so satisfying… and so is throwing your opponent to the gators.

While I absolutely love this title, I must say Mauro Ranallo and Jerry Lawler do a superb job when it comes to commentary; however, it tends to get a little repetitive. In addition to this, some of the commentary is pretty inaccurate to what just happened in the ring. This is a minor flaw, which is often seen in most sports titles anyway.

As we know there are also a ton of microtransactions present; however, this does not mean that you have to go and burn through your wallet to play the game. You can earn in-game currency to purchase a number of items instead of spending cash on it – which is a grind, but so worth it.

WWE 2k Battlegrounds is the most fun I have had this year. I love the over-the-top style gameplay and just the pure insanity that rocks the game. It’s fresh, charismatic, and something I would like to see more of. So, to the developers, nicely done. Here is hoping to see more over-the-top action in WWE 2K Battlegrounds.
