Let’s face it… It’s not often that I’m impressed by laptops. My belief is, well, they are like mobile phones, they all do the same thing. Most folks use them for work, play and social media… Much like mobile phones. However, HP has introduced me to a device that is a little different… and I’d even go as far as saying a little “special.”

Now you all probably thought that the corporates got hold of me and offered me a large sum of paper for this review… but I don’t roll like that, so no. When I think something is rubbish, I say it is.

So, what makes the HP Elite Dragonfly so awesome? Well, since the COVID-19 pandemic has gripped the globe and crippled economies, we have all pretty much been in lockdown. Myself, my family, and other folks around the world have been confined to their homes… Only being allowed out for essentials. But if you think about it, it’s for “the greater good.”

Now, being in a lockdown can make life very frustrating. Not for me though, I work from home, gym from home, and do most stuff from home. This is due to the fact that, as announced on the Tech IT Out Facebook Page, I was really sick and have been in recovery for close to a year now. Anyway, that’s beside the point, what makes the HP Elite Dragonfly so different and so special from other 2-in-1 laptops? Well, instead of hoarding the device to myself, I let my family play around with it too. What were the results? Well, let me tell you.

Firstly, my 13-year-old daughter, who has been wanting to get into fashion design and art had the opportunity to be more creative than ever. She downloaded some sketching apps and let loose her creativity. The results were absolutely amazing. Not only has she realised her potential, but she has also allowed us to see just how skilful and creative she really is. Even as a beginner, she has proven that she has got what it takes to be a true artist. It’s also allowed her to study, get in touch with family, and chat for hours with her friends.

Now, she loves Fortnite, but, as this is essentially a business machine… It does not really push games too well. So, sorry about that. Never the less, it’s still pretty powerful and sports some impressive specs. First is the touch-screen display, which rocks three display options: privacy 2,6, 4K2 and a low power mode. As it has a touch display, it is all fully compatible with the HP Rechargeable Active Pen G3. Thus, resulting in a 2-in-1 that can be used for drawing, artistic expression and doodling.

The system we have been testing also comes with 16GB RAM and an Intel Core i5 8365U CPU running at 1.60GHz – 1.90 GHz. While the processor is not made for gaming, it’s perfect for business, studying, and watching movies in 4K at 60 FPS. Now, I have this habit of wanting to watch everything in 4K. So, as school is out as well as creche/kindergarten, myself and my wife have been trying to keep our 3-year-old daughter busy.

So, instead of being subjected to Peppa Pig all day, we sit with her and watch wildlife programmes, yes in 4K. As the colours of the 4K 14-inch display pop and show a much more refined detail, she not only learns about her favourite animals, but she also gets to see them in greater detail. It’s amazing to see her face light up when she sees lions drinking at waterholes and elephants basking in the sun within their natural habitat. To add to the experience, the audio is driven by 4 Bang & Olufsen, HP Noise Cancellation, top-firing speakers, and 4 discrete amps that work together to create an immersive sound experience.

While she loves the videos we watch, she also gets to draw and colour in with her big sister, which ultimately allows them to bond. Which is greatly needed, especially in a time like this.

Now, apart from sketch and play, the HP Elite Dragonfly is a great machine for those looking to work from home and while on the go. It’s exceptionally light and weighs in at, depending on the model, just under 1KG making is super portable. While it is light and compact, it’s also got a pretty solid magnesium body that will withstand a few knocks, just not excessively hard ones. It also has a pretty awesome keyboard, which won’t disturb people – not like my current mechanical/membrane hybrid does (I like the clicky noises it makes). To add to the features, the keyboard is also backlit, which allows for late-night working without the need of too much light.

So, yes, the HP Elite Dragonfly is the perfect work-from-home-machine as well as a machine that would be very beneficial to those who travel or are on the go a lot. My wife also likes it, which means that it must be pretty good too, right?

As I mentioned before, I do work from home; however, I also do a ton of photography and video editing. I spent some time editing some images using this 2-in-1 and it actually made life a little easier. Video editing was pretty cool too… and so was recording my podcasts.

For those that are security conscious, the HP Elite Dragonfly is filled to the brim with security measures. It comes pretty standard with the following:

HP Sure Sense
Traditional antivirus can’t always recognize new attacks. HP Sure Sense harnesses the power of deep-learning AI to identify and quarantine never-before-seen attacks, helping prevent infections before they happen.

HP Sure Click
Help protect your PC from websites and attachments with malware, ransomware or viruses with hardware-enforced security from HP Sure Click.

HP Sure Start Gen5
Firmware attacks can completely devastate your PC – stay protected with our self-healing BIOS.

HP Sure Run Gen2
To get control of your PC, attackers first need to take down its defences. Keep critical security protections like antivirus up and running with HP Sure Run Gen2.

HP Sure Recover with Embedded Reimaging Gen2 (Optional)
Advanced malware can wipe out your OS and disrupt your business. HP Sure Recover with Embedded Reimaging Gen2 ensures fast, secure, and automated recovery from anywhere.

HP Manageability Integration Kit
The HP Manageability Integration Kit helps speed up image creation and management of hardware, BIOS, and security through Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager.

There’s also a fingerprint reader on hand and a rather nifty Webcam cover. So, if you ever think you may be being watched, well, just slide the cover shut.

While privacy and security are top-class, so are the connectivity features. The HP Elite Dragonfly can connect almost anywhere with optional support for up to gigabit-class 5G LTE wireless broadband technology with 4×4 antennas. So you will be surfing the web faster than the web can be surfed.

The HP Elite Dragonfly is not simply just a business machine… It’s a machine that can be used to upskill, educate, entertain, and bring you closer to the ones you love. It can teach you how to draw, sketch, doodle or just draw stick men as I do. It can be used to teach, inspire, enlighten, and amaze your toddler. It can be used for business, making that paper, and even go as far as letting your inner creative out.

From my side, on a personal note, it brought myself and my wife closer to our kids. It also allowed my eldest daughter to unlock her creative potential. It also allowed myself and my wife to show our youngest what the world looks like in pure detail. It allowed us to bond, work, learn and play… and my wife liked it – so a big round of applause to HP for that.

Overall, the HP Elite Dragonfly gets a solid thumbs-up, not just from, but my family too.

On a side note: Please, be safe out there folks.
