In X-men: Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable.

Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiralling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

The Crit:
X-men: Dark Phoenix officially brings the long-running X-Men franchise to a close as Disney takes ownership of it. While X-Men: Dark Phoenix is a pretty decent film… it tends to fumble its way through the dark in order to find its place in this world. It’s certainly better than Xmen: The Last Stand; however, it does essentially just wash away the set-up that Xmen: Apocolypse had tried to set up.

Overall, X-Men Dark Phoenix does stay true to the comics and it is a pretty decent film; however, it tends to fall a bit flat in certain areas as it tries to give life to a cast of characters that are just not given the chance to shine. It is well worth the watch, if you are a true fan of the franchise that is.
