If you did not know it already… The War for the Planet of the Apes is a 2017 American science fiction film, which has been directed by Matt Reeves. The film was also written by Reeves as well as Mark Bomback. Essentially, the film is a sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), it is the third and final instalment in the Planet of the Apes reboot series.

Caesar (voiced by Andy Serkis) and his group of apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel (played by Woody Harrelson). After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar begins to plot his revenge on not only those responsible for the death of those closest to him, but he also makes it his priority to kill the Colonel by any means necessary.

While the plot may seem fairly straight forward, War for the Planet of the Apes is a deep film filled with action, adventure, and deep emotion. While there is this never ending war surrounding the apes and humans, Reeves and Bomback manage to capture the raw emotions of the individuals within the war… rather than focusing on the war itself. It’s through this that we had the opportunity to connect with the cast and the characters on an emotional level in this brilliant film.

Apart from story, War for the Planet of the Apes is also a technological marvel. Not only does it feature some fantastic landscapes and set-pieces, but it also features some of the best motion-capture performances we have seen to date. What also makes this film well worth watching is the fact that it incorporates a fair amount of sign language, which is essentially the main method of communication between the apes… well those that have not learnt the art of speech. Accompanied by subtitles, this brings a new dynamic of communication to the film, which ultimately keeps the viewer engaged from start to finish.

War for the Planet of the Apes is a blockbuster that cannot be missed, especially by fans of the original series. Overall, it’s a brilliant conclusion to the prequel series and features some of the finest motion-capture performances we have seen to date. Not only is it a technological masterpiece, but it is also a deeply emotional film that is packed with enough action and emotion that you will want to watch it twice.

War for the Planet of the Apes releases in South Africa on the 14th of July 2017.
